Antecedent Strategies

Antecedent strategies are a proactive way to modify the environment before a behavior occurs to reduce the likelihood of challenges behaviors occurring. Antecedent strategies can be used in schools, homes, work, or centers, and can benefit all individuals.

Real life example: That sticky note on your fridge to call the doctor’s office.

Antecedent strategies could range from changing something physical about the environment, like removing an object in the environment, or it can be changing verbal language to be more concrete and neutral. Check out the infographic below for more.
